Common questions

Do we need any experience or gear?

No experience is needed; scouts learn as they go. Some gear does become necessary over time, such as a uniform, a handbook, and camping basics. Leaders will tell you what's needed and when, so you don't have to buy everything up front.

Can girls join?

Yes. Pack 777 is a Family Pack for boys and girls in K–5, and Troop 1709 is a Scouts BSA troop for girls ages 11–17.

Is this the same as Girl Scouts?

No. We're part of Scouting America (formerly the Boy Scouts of America), a separate organization from Girl Scouts of the USA.

Do parents have to take part?

Cub Scouting is family-based. Lions and Tigers take part with a parent or other adult partner. In the troops, scouts take the lead, and parent help with driving and campouts is always welcome.

We don't live in Montpelier. Can we still join?

Yes. We most typically serve families from Montpelier, Berlin, Cabot, Calais, East Montpelier, Fayston, Middlesex, Moretown, Northfield, Woodbury, and Worcester, and we welcome families from anywhere.

What does it cost?

Scouting America charges an annual registration fee, and units may have their own dues. A leader will go over costs when you get in touch.
